Aggravated Robbery Charges in Illinois
Illinois law defines robbery as the taking of property, other than certain motor vehicles (such offenses are treated separately) from the person or presence of another through force or threat of imminent force [720 ILS 5/18-1]. A person commits armed robbery when he or she violates section 18-1, above, and carries a firearm or deadly weapon on or about his or her person.
Armed robbery with a deadly weapon is a class X felony offense, punishable by a mandatory minimum prison sentence of six to 30 years. Illinois law provides for enhanced penalties if the offender discharges a firearm or causes severe bodily injury or death by discharging a firearm during a robbery [720 ILS 5/18-2(b)].
